31 Jul Survive the heat wave with these summer beauty essentials
Are you ready for another heat wave? There’s a big one on the way!
Personally, I’m glad of a little more sunshine but at the same time know scorching hot weather can wreak havoc on the skin! The good news is you don’t have to suffer. There are plenty of things you can do to prep your skin and save your makeup while you’re at it! Here I’ve put together a list of summer beauty essentials that will not only help you survive the heat wave but look amazing while you’re doing it…
Summer Beauty Essentials: Skincare
It’s pretty obvious but I’ll say it anyway – now’s the time to replenish your sun cream supply. No matter how dark your complexion, you still need protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. It’s not just a matter of burning but how radiation from the sun can change and damage the DNA of your skin cells. It’s not worth taking the risk.
Look for sun cream with a 5 star protection, against both UVA and UVB rays. If you’ve already got sun cream at home, make sure it’s still in date. There is a little symbol on the back of the product that will tell you how long it lasts for. Expired sun cream may not be as effective at protecting your skin.
If you’re after a recommendation, take a look at Cryobloc. This product can be used as part of your daily routine to protect your skin from the sun. It has an SPF of 50, is fully waterproof and comes in a handy travel size pot.

Summer Makeup Beauty Essentials
If you’re happy going makeup free in the extreme heat then go for it! Just be sure to use an SPF on your face to protect your delicate skin. If makeup is an absolute must (and that’s perfectly okay) here are a few things you’ll need to maintain it in hot weather…
Hydrating moisturiser and primer
Before applying makeup, it’s important to use a moisturiser to hydrate the skin. In extreme heat, the more hydration your skin gets, the better! Dermaquest B5 Moisture Matte is great for moisturising the skin, without adding shine. If you need an extra boost, there’s also the Dermaquest B5 Hydrating Serum, which you can use in addition to your usual moisturiser.
Primers are designed to adhere makeup to your skin and will soak up any excess oil. There are all sorts of primers available from creams to sprays, with something to suit every complexion.
Top pick: The ARK Skin Protector SPF 30 Primer 30ml
A lightweight base
Base-wise you’re going to want something that is lightweight and allows your skin to breathe. Instead of your usual foundation, you may want to opt for a tinted SPF. This will offer light coverage, whilst providing protection from the sun. You’ll get a healthy glow without feeling like your skin is caked in makeup.
Top pick: The Body Shop Instaglow CC Cream SPF20
Waterproof eye makeup
Avoid panda eyes by choosing waterproof mascara. It’ll save the embarrassment of it running down your face if things get a little sweaty. You can also buy waterproof brow gels and pencil products. No one wants smudged brows after all!
Top Pick: elf Waterproof Lengthening and Volumising Mascara
Setting spray
Setting sprays will prevent your makeup from fading or melting off in the sun. Simply give your face a quick spritz after you’ve applied your makeup and you’ll be good to go. Some sprays can be re-applied throughout the day to cool you down and keep your makeup looking fresh.
Top pick: Revolution Sport Fix Spray
