Medik8 Vitamin C Review

Medik8 is the indie skincare brand everyone’s talking about and I’m extremely pleased to be one of their stockists! Their concept is simple – CSA. Vitamin C plus SPF by day and Vitamin A by night. Here’s a quick Medik8 Vitamin C review so you can learn about the benefits and get to know some of their amazing products.

Why is Vitamin C so important?

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful vitamins for preventing premature ageing.

It has 3 key benefits:

  1. It’s an exceptional antioxidant
  2. It’s essential for the synthesis of collagen
  3. It helps with pigmentation irregularities

Medik8 Vitamin C Review – The Types

medik8-vitamin-c-types

Medik8 offers 3 different forms of Vitamin C within its product range. Each formulated to penetrate deeply into the skin’s protective barrier, restore radiance and improve uneven skin tones. Their skincare is are also anti-ageing. Vitamin C stimulates healthy collagen and elastin production to keep the skin youthful and supple.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate – THD

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD) is the gentlest form of Vitamin C used in the Medik8 range. It is a stable oil-soluble form of Vitamin C that easily penetrates the skin’s barrier. From there, it is converted into pure ascorbic acid by the skin’s enzymes and that’s how it work its magic within your skin.

Studies have shown that THD not only penetrates the epidermis (top layer of the skin) but also sinks to the dermis –  the deepest layer of the skin.

This form of Vitamin C is used in several Medik8 products, including:

  •  C-Tetra Serum
  • C-Tetra Cream
  • Daily Radiance Vitamin C
  • C-Tetra Intense
  • C-Tetra Eye Cream

Within each of these products, the strength of THD varies. As the name suggests, the C-Tetra Intense has the highest percentage of 14%.

L-Ascorbic Acid

L-Ascorbic Acid is another derivative of Vitamin C. I’d describe this as the one for purists. The people looking for noticeable results and real changes to the skin!

L-Ascorbic acid has a low PH, which is great for penetration. However, it comes with a problem – it’s very hard to stabilise when oxygen makes contact. Thankfully, Medik8 have come up with a fantastic solution. To stabilise the L-Ascorbic Acid in their skincare, they contain it in a chamber saturated with nitrogen, rather than air, so that it doesn’t come into contact with oxygen.

One of the key benefits of L-Ascorbic Acid is protection from free radicals, which can cause a whole host of problems in the body, including early signs of ageing. It also helps stimulate healthy collagen and elastin production. Again, this supports the structure of the skin, keeping it youthful and wrinkle-free. Finally, it minimises the appearance of discolouration.

For noticeable results, I highly recommend trying the Medik8 Pure C15 serum.  Apply to the face, neck and décolletage after cleansing. Leave it to soak in before applying your moisturiser.

The water-based serum is packaged in 2 separate bottles to improve stabilisation. Use one up, before opening the other to keep it fresh!

Ethylated L-Ascorbic Acid

medik8-skincareFinally, we have Ethylated L-Ascorbic Acid. This is the most powerful form of Vitamin C used in Medik8’s products.

It sounds complex but it is a molecule based on ascorbic acid, with carbon chains attached to the most receptive part of the molecule. Essentially, the Vitamin C and Ethyl component are bound together to make them stable and soluble in both water and oil.

What does this mean for the user? Well, it’ll absorb super easily into the skin and as with all of Medik8’s Vitamin C products, it has a huge range of benefits. These include:

  • Preventing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Protecting from free radical damage
  • Stimulating healthy collagen and elastin production
  • Minimising the appearance of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone

2 of Medik8’s products contain this powerful anti-ageing ingredient – the Super C30 and the Super C30 Intense. Both oil-based serums contain a whopping 30% of Ethylated L-Ascorbic Acid. They smell amazing (always a bonus) and feel like silk on the skin.

Medik8 Vitamin C Review – My Star Product

C-Tetra Serum

One of my favourite products from the Medik8 range is the C-Tetra serum. It’s designed for all skin types and is a great way to introduce Vitamin C into your skincare regime. I’ve been using it myself and have noticed a major difference. It literally illuminates your complexion! Application is a dream – it feels really lovely on the skin and if that wasn’t enough, it smells good too.

Looking for a serum that’s a great ‘all-rounder?’ This is the one for you.

As well as offering a superb range of Vitamin C and anti-ageing products, the thing that drew me to Medik8 is their brand values. Medik8 describe themselves as ‘an anti-ageing brand that thinks like a natural brand’ and I couldn’t put it better myself.

As a vegan, animal lover and eco-warrior, I appreciate brands that share my values. Medik8’s product range is vegan, cruelty-free and created with sustainability in mind. You can read all about it on their website. Wouldn’t it be great if all beauty brands were this forward-thinking?
