30 Apr 3 common skincare problems and tips to treat them
Let’s chat skincare! Today I want to talk about the common skincare problems we all get from time to time. Along with tips on how to treat them.
But before I get started, I just want to make it clear that there isn’t such thing as flawless skin. It’s a word that’s thrown around a lot in the beauty industry (even I use it) but no one is truly without flaws.
Remember, the ‘perfect’ faces you see on Instagram influencers are filtered. The celebrities with their glowing golden skin are airbrushed. In real life no one looks that way! I’m not here to say that skin imperfections must be treated but rather provide tips so you feel comfortable in your own skin.
Common skincare problems: #1 Adult acne
Acne is something a lot of people experience in their teenage years and through puberty but did you know that around 40% of the adult population aged 20-40 also has some form of acne?
Adult acne is caused by excessive oil production. It’s sometimes linked to hormone imbalances and can also be a side effect of taking certain medications.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a miracle cure for acne. However, there are a number of things you can do to prevent new spots appearing. Along with reducing the chances of scarring.
Firstly, as a professional, I’d recommend visiting your doctor or dermatologist for advice on the type of acne you have and treatments available. Secondly, try these tips for tackling acne yourself:
- Avoid picking your spots (picking spreads bacteria and can cause scarring)
- Cleanse your skin morning and night
- Use a gentle exfoliator to unclog pores
- Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated
A product that is great for reducing skin congestion and acne is the Dermaclear BHA cleanser. This daily facial wash that contains powerful performance ingredients such as Salicylic Acid and Tea Tree Oil, which are great for treating oily skin. The Dermaclear Cleanser can be purchased from my online shop or directly from the salon.
Alternatively, you may want to look into a non-invasive medical therapy. At my salon in Bromley, I offer an IPL Acne Treatment, which is designed to eliminate spot-causing bacteria on the skin, as well as stimulate collagen production to reduce the appearance of scarring and improve skin texture. For more information you can visit the medical therapies page on my website or get in touch. I offer every client a free consultation so we can make sure it’s the right treatment for you and discuss things like expected results and costs.
#2 Rosacea
The NHS website describes Rosacea as a ‘common but poorly understood long-term skin condition.’ It usually affects the face and has various symptoms. These include episodes of flushing (the skin turning red for short periods), along with burning sensations, permanent redness, spots and the appearance of small blood vessels on the skin. Rosacea varies in severity and is different in one person to the next.
Spicy food, caffeine, alcohol and stress are known triggers that can cause a Rosacea flare up.
Suffering from Rosacea? It’s best to see your doctor. They will examine your skin and may request further testing to rule out any other medical conditions. You might be supplied with creams and gels for your skin, as well as oral medications to clear up more severe spots.
It’s a good idea to keep a bit of a food diary so you can monitor any particular food or food groups that cause your Rosacea to worsen. I’d also recommend using a high factor SPF to protect your skin from the sun. Be sure to choose hypoallergenic or fragrance-free products where possible.
In terms of alternative treatments, you could go down the route of having IPL. This is a risk-free, skin-friendly treatment that involves aiming a laser at the affected areas of skin to reduce the appearance of visible blood vessels. I am fully qualified in IPL Rosacea treatments and use a medically certified IPL system at the salon.
If you would like more information on Rosacea IPL, feel free to get in touch.
#3 Dark circles
Many people experience dark circles, which can make them feel negative about the way they look. Dark circles can appear for various different reasons including: age, allergies, eyestrain, fatigue, sun exposure and dehydration. They could even just be in your genes!
Dark circles are usually nothing to worry about and are not a sign of something more sinister. If however, they’re bothering you, these are a few things you can try at home…
- Applying a cold compress
- Getting more sleep
- Concealing with makeup
[Here’s a great colour-correcting guide for effective concealing with makeup.]
For many people, dark circles are temporary. If yours are bothering you or don’t seem to disappear, there are options for longer-lasting results, including chemical peels, which are designed to rejuvenate the skin.
I offer a number of different resurfacer and chemical peel treatments at the salon. Click here to learn more about them and if you have any questions please drop me a message. Let’s arrange a free consultation to discuss the best treatment plan for achieving your desired results.
There’s a treatment for everyone – it’s just about finding out what will work best for you.
