Busting Skincare & Treatment Myths

Have you ever been put off using a skincare product or trying a treatment because of something you’ve read on the internet, seen on TikTok or been told by a well-meaning friend? Unfortunately, when it comes to skincare and aesthetic treatments, there’s a lot of conflicting information out there…and some is a load of rubbish! So to help you get your skincare facts right, we’ve compiled a quick blog post busting some of the most popular skincare and treatment myths.

Myth #1 – Only teenagers get acne

Although more than 85% of teenagers experience acne during puberty, they aren’t the only ones who suffer from it. Unfortunately, acne isn’t picky about who it targets! It is one of the most common skin conditions worldwide, affecting people of all races, genders and ages.

Common reasons for adult acne include:

  • Family history of acne
  • Changing hormone levels
  • Contact irritation (products)
  • Emotional stress
  • Physical stress
  • Medications and medical conditions
  • Clogged pores
  • Bacteria
  • Foods

If you are experiencing acne as an adult, firstly, don’t panic; you won’t necessarily have it for the rest of your life. Avoiding acne triggers can solve the problem. But if triggers are unavoidable, plenty of acne treatment options are available. Book a skin consultation with Becky to create a bespoke treatment plan.

Myth #2 – SPF protection is all the same

Again – not valid. Not all SPF skincare products are created equally. When buying an SPF, it’s essential to ensure it protects your skin against UVA and UVB rays. Be aware that some SPF makeup products only protect against UVA rays, which is not enough!

Our top SPF products offering UVA & UVB protection include:

All of these SPF skincare products are vegan and cruelty-free. Shop online from Beautiful Secret, our skincare store & get FREE delivery!

Myth #3 – You don’t need to moisturise if you have oily skin

Oily skin needs moisturising because it helps regulate oil production. If you don’t moisturise, your skin will dry out, and its natural response will be to create even more oil. Choose a lightweight moisturiser that is suitable for oily skin. Here are some of our top oily skin moisturiser recommendations:

Myth #4 – Dermaplaning will make you grow a beard

This one always gives us a giggle! Having regular dermaplaning facials will not let us repeat that – it WILL NOT make you grow a beard! Your hair won’t even grow back stronger. Dermaplaning does not affect hair growth whatsoever. We only remove unwanted hair (peach fuzz) from the skin’s surface, and it does not affect the root.

What dermaplaning will do is:

  • Leave your skin silky smooth & glowing
  • Stimulate the production of new skin cells & collagen
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation and acne/spot scarring

Fancy giving it a try? Book your first dermaplaning appointment with Becky at the discounted price of £55 (usually £65)!

Myth #5 – Lip fillers never look natural

Lip fillers don’t have to result in fish lips or a trout pout. Sure, some celebrities like to max out on lip filler, but you don’t have to. In fact, here at our Bromley aesthetics clinic, we champion natural filler results that enhance your own beautiful features with just a little tweak here and there.

You can see our lip filler transformations (with really natural results) on our Instagram. Like what you see? Book a consultation to see if dermal fillers are the right treatment for you!
