What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage & What Are the Benefits?
Manual lymphatic drainage, often shortened to MLD, has become one of the most talked-about body treatments in recent years. But it is very different from the deep tissue massage many people picture. In this guide we explain what manual lymphatic drainage is, how it works, the benefits clients often notice and whether it might be right for you.
What is manual lymphatic drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialist massage technique that uses light, slow, rhythmic movements to encourage the natural flow of lymph around the body. The technique was developed in the 1930s and is still used today in both wellbeing and clinical settings.
Unlike a sports or deep tissue massage, MLD does not work into the muscles. The pressure is very gentle, because the lymphatic vessels it targets sit just beneath the surface of the skin.
What does the lymphatic system do?
Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that runs throughout your body. It plays an important role in your immune system and helps carry excess fluid, proteins and waste products away from your tissues so they can be processed by the body.
Unlike your blood, which is pumped around by your heart, lymph relies on movement, breathing and muscle activity to keep it flowing. When it slows down, some people notice puffiness, heaviness or swelling, particularly in the legs, ankles and face.
How does lymphatic drainage massage work?
During a lymphatic drainage massage, your therapist uses soft, repetitive stretching and pumping movements, working in a specific sequence towards the lymph nodes. The aim is to gently encourage lymph to move through the system more efficiently.
Most sessions start by working around the neck and the main lymph node areas before moving to the rest of the body. This prepares the pathways so fluid can drain more easily.
What are the benefits of manual lymphatic drainage?
Everyone responds differently, but clients often tell us they notice the following benefits.
Reduced puffiness and fluid retention
MLD can help ease the feeling of fluid retention, particularly in the legs, ankles and face. Many people say they feel lighter and less bloated after a session.
Support after cosmetic procedures
Lymphatic drainage massage is often used to help manage swelling after certain cosmetic treatments and surgery. If you have had a surgical procedure, you will need clearance from your surgeon or medical team before booking.
Deep relaxation
The slow, rhythmic movements are incredibly calming. Many clients find MLD helps them switch off and unwind, and some notice better sleep afterwards.
A brighter looking complexion
Facial lymphatic drainage can help reduce morning puffiness and leave the skin looking fresher and more radiant.
A complement to body contouring
MLD is a popular partner to body contouring treatments such as fat freezing, as part of a tailored treatment plan. It is important to note that lymphatic drainage is not a weight loss treatment.
What to expect during your MLD session
Your first appointment begins with a consultation. Your therapist will ask about your health, medical history and what you would like to achieve, so the session can be tailored to you.
During the treatment you will lie comfortably while your therapist works through a gentle sequence of movements. The pressure is light, so you should not feel any discomfort. Sessions typically last around an hour.
Afterwards, it is a good idea to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the rest of the day and take things easy. Some people notice they need the toilet more often after a session, which is completely normal.
How often should you have lymphatic drainage?
This depends on your goals. Some clients enjoy MLD as a regular wellbeing treatment, while others book a short course, for example after a cosmetic procedure or alongside body contouring. Your therapist will recommend a plan tailored to your unique goals.
Who should avoid manual lymphatic drainage?
MLD is gentle, but it is not suitable for everyone. You may need medical approval, or be advised not to have the treatment, if you have:
An active infection, fever or acute inflammation
A history of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis
Heart or kidney conditions
Active cancer or are currently undergoing cancer treatment
Recently had surgery without your surgeon's approval
Low blood pressure or certain thyroid conditions
If you are pregnant, please let us know when booking. If you are unsure whether MLD is suitable for you, speak to your GP or get in touch with us before booking. Your safety always comes first.
