How Long Does Microblading Last?
Microblading is one of the most popular ways to achieve fuller, more defined brows without the daily effort of pencils and powders. One of the first questions we are asked is how long the results actually last. The short answer is usually 12 to 18 months, but there is a little more to it than that.
What is microblading?
Microblading is a semi-permanent brow treatment. Using a fine handheld tool, your artist creates tiny hair-like strokes and deposits pigment just beneath the surface of the skin. The result is natural-looking brows that blend with your own hairs.
Because the pigment sits in the upper layers of the skin, microblading gradually fades over time. This is what makes it semi-permanent rather than permanent, and it gives you the flexibility to adjust your brow shape as trends and preferences change.
How long does microblading last?
For most people, microblading lasts between 12 and 18 months before a colour boost is needed. Some clients find their brows hold well for longer, while others notice fading sooner.
You will usually have a top-up appointment around six to eight weeks after your first session. This allows your artist to perfect the shape and fill in any areas where the pigment has not held as well during healing, which is completely normal.
What affects how long microblading lasts?
Your skin type
Skin type is one of the biggest factors in microblading lifespan. Oily skin tends to push pigment out more quickly, so strokes can blur or fade sooner. Dry and normal skin types often hold pigment for longer. If you have very oily skin, your artist may suggest an alternative such as powder brows, which can suit oilier skin better.
Sun exposure
UV light breaks down pigment over time. Regular sun exposure without protection can cause your brows to fade faster or change tone.
Your skincare routine
Exfoliating acids, retinoids and some anti-ageing products speed up skin cell turnover, which can cause pigment to fade more quickly. Try to keep these products away from your brow area.
Lifestyle
Frequent swimming, saunas, hot yoga and heavy exercise can all affect how long your brows last, especially during the healing period.
Aftercare
How you care for your brows in the first few weeks makes a real difference. Picking at flakes, getting your brows wet too soon or applying makeup before they have healed can all affect how well the pigment settles.
What happens as microblading heals?
The healing process takes around four to six weeks and it is normal for your brows to go through a few stages:
Days 1 to 7: brows look sharper and darker than the final result
Days 7 to 14: light flaking as the skin heals, and strokes may look patchy or faded
Weeks 2 to 4: colour gradually returns as the skin settles
Weeks 4 to 6: your brows settle into their final, softer shade
Do not worry if your brows look lighter than expected during the second week. This is completely normal and the colour usually comes back.
How to make your microblading last longer
Follow your aftercare instructions carefully, especially in the first ten days
Avoid picking or scratching your brows while they heal
Keep your brows dry and avoid swimming, saunas and steam for the period your artist advises
Protect your brows from the sun once fully healed
Keep exfoliating acids and retinoids away from the brow area
Book your colour boost before your brows fade completely
When should you book a colour boost?
Most clients book a colour boost every 12 to 18 months. Leaving it until your brows have faded completely may mean you need a fuller treatment rather than a quick refresh.
What if you want to change or remove old microblading?
If you have older brow work that has faded unevenly or changed colour, there are options. Depending on your brows, this might include a correction treatment, saline tattoo removal or laser tattoo removal. A consultation is the best place to start.

Frequently asked questions
Is microblading permanent?
No. Microblading is semi-permanent and gradually fades over 12 to 18 months for most people.
Does microblading hurt?
Most clients describe a scratching sensation rather than pain. A topical numbing cream is used to keep you comfortable.
Do I need a top-up after microblading?
Yes. A top-up around six to eight weeks after your first session is part of the process and helps perfect your results.
Is microblading suitable for oily skin?
Microblading can be done on oily skin, but results may fade faster. Your artist may recommend powder brows instead.
